Long Grove · aged materials

Some of what an old interior carries should stay. The dulling on a wheel rim where a hand has always sat. The softened grain on a driver's bolster. The color a dashboard has settled into over twenty summers. None of that is dirt, and taking it off is not an improvement. The question worth asking before anything is touched is which marks are age and which are buildup, because only one of the two comes off.

So a small area gets tested first, and the result sets the stopping point. Older coatings and brittle plastics take the low-moisture route rather than the aggressive one, and trim is cleaned and dressed rather than glossed into something it never was. Service in Long Grove starts at $150 and runs two to six hours at your own driveway; we need room to open the doors and a standard outlet. What will not change: a crack, a panel that has gone chalky, a surface someone has already refinished once. We say which is which at the walkthrough, before the work starts rather than after.

Local notes

Notes from Long Grove.

01

An old interior asks a different question from a neglected one. Neglect comes off. Age does not, and mostly should not.

02

Gravel edges leave a fine grit in door jambs and along the carpet channel, and that lifts. The mark fifteen years of it left on a rubber seal does not, and we will say so before we start rather than after.

03

Long Grove wrote preservation into village policy before most towns thought about it. The interior version of that is deciding what not to touch.

The interior is the focus — leather, upholstery, carpet, glass, and trim, cleaned and conditioned in place. A hand wash, wheel & tire detail, headlight restoration, or engine bay clean can ride along with any service, priced in the open. We don’t take on paint correction, ceramic coating, or anything applied over the paint — for that, a dedicated exterior shop is the right call.

Aged material wants each surface treated on its own terms, at the pace that surface will accept, with testing time built into the day rather than added to it.

Logistics · Long Grove

Quiet logistics.

  • We come to your driveway; village-center addresses with tight parking just need a note when you book.

  • Evening confirmation, morning arrival, the full day built in.

  • Two to six hours. Testing time on aged material is part of the service, not an addition to it.

  • The walkthrough happens before anything is touched, and that is where the stopping point is agreed.

Questions

Asked in Long Grove.

Long Grove pricing starts at $150.

Will cleaning take the patina off?

No, and that is the line the work runs to. Patina is what age has settled into a surface; buildup is what has landed on top of it. A small test area shows which is which on your car, and the result sets how far we go. Where the two genuinely cannot be separated on a panel, we stop there and tell you.

How do you decide where to stop?

By what the test area gives back. If a surface improves and keeps its character, we carry on. If it starts to look resurfaced rather than clean, that is the stopping point and we leave it there. It is a judgment made at the panel, not a rule applied to the whole car.

Can cracked or faded material be restored?

Improved, not restored. Cracking is structural, and detailing does not fill it. A faded panel usually deepens and evens out without going back to new. We class it honestly before starting: expected to improve, partly improvable, or cleanable but permanently changed.

Do older materials get different products?

Different products and less moisture. Older coatings and brittle plastics do not take a wet, aggressive method well, so those surfaces get the low-moisture route and more time instead of more product.
